How to Start a Transitional Capsule Wardrobe
The secret to easy everyday dressing? It’s all about a capsule wardrobe; a collection of stylish staples – from basics to statement must-haves – that form the foundation for a multitude of outfits. Fashion experts have long hailed the benefits of curating a transitional capsule wardrobe, and the trick is picking items that are ultra-versatile and go with anything. Once you’ve got your essential clothing nailed, getting dressed in the morning becomes quick and effortless.
Get started with your own capsule wardrobe by following these tips…
1. Invest in High Quality Tops and T-Shirts
Basic tops and t-shirts are crucial to every capsule wardrobe, as you can wear them with jeans, skirts, trousers – anything – and they’ll always appear timeless. Invest in styles and fabrics that look and feel high quality, like the Rowen Avenue Ruffle Blouse and the Vero Moda Short Sleeve V-Neck Top. Once you’ve found fits and fabrics you like, get them in a few colours – both neutrals and bolds.
2. Choose Transitional Dresses
Creating a capsule wardrobe doesn’t mean buying basics only. Embrace printed dresses that will work from season to season with a switch of accessories. Try midi lengths, chiffony fabrics and prints that don’t nod to the time of year (tropical vibes aren’t transeasonal). Then ask yourself: could I wear this with boots and sandals? If it’s a yes, you’ve found a capsule piece, like the two above.
3. Find Your New Favourite Denim
Nothing says ‘easy dressing’ like jeans. You can dress them up or dress them down, and work them in a range of trending cuts to suit your style. But, for your capsule wardrobe, timeless shapes and washes is the way to go. We recommend always having at least one pair of black skinny or straight leg jeans, and one pair of true blue wide leg or tapered fit jeans. Of course, you can build out your denim collection way beyond these two, but don’t be surprised if they’re the pairs you reach for on most days.
4. Add Tailored Trousers Too
For those days when you need to go a little bit formal, tailored trousers are a must as well. Pick a black or navy pair for instant chic, and don’t be afraid to embrace new fabrics. Case in point: switching your style up with faux leather lends a little extra edge to your overall look; great for date nights out with black pumps and a simple black vest.
5. Slip On a Chic White Shirt
Don’t underestimate the power of the classic white shirt. You can tuck it into blue jeans or black trousers, and instantly look ‘done’. Add a touch of gold jewellery and you’re good to go. A ‘plain’ white shirt is a staple, but consider adding a satiny white shirt to your capsule wardrobe too. It’s great for nights out with friends – especially with those faux leather trousers.
6. Grab a Biker Jacket
Believe it or not, a biker is one of the most versatile jackets out there. It’s dressy and it’s casual, it goes with jeans and dresses, and it feels much warmer than it looks. Go for faux leather in a dark shade, like navy or black. Or, if you’re feeling those spring vibes already, pick up a suede jacket in a bold colour, like hot pink.
7. Complete Your Look with a Crossbody Bag
Because there’s no easier bag to wear (hands-free is always a big plus), make sure you have a crossbody bag in a tan or black colour to complete your capsule wardrobe. This satchel is roomy enough to hold all your essentials, features zip compartments to organise, and comes in two colourways to go with all ensembles. It’s fair to say we’re obsessed.
Of course, your capsule wardrobe can extend beyond these clothing essentials. Depending on your style, you might want to add a certain shape of skirt or a little leopard print. (Leopard’s a neutral now, right?) But, with these basics, so many everyday outfits are covered. They’re the foundation, and your trending, seasonal pieces simply complete the look.
